Can I Open WebP in Photoshop?

Google's new WebP image format promises smaller file sizes and faster loading times on the web. But can you open WebP in Photoshop?

The answer is yes, but only if you have the latest version of Photoshop CC (Creative Cloud). That's because Adobe added WebP support in November of 2016 with the release of Photoshop CC 2017.

If you try to open a WebP image in an older version of Photoshop, you'll see the following error message: "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document."

So what are the benefits of using WebP? Google says that WebP images are typically about 25% smaller than JPEGs and 50% smaller than PNGs. That means faster loading times for websites and apps that use a lot of images.

WebP also supports transparency (alpha channels), just like PNGs. And unlike JPEGs, WebPs can be animated, which makes them ideal for use in banners and ads.

To open a WebP image in Photoshop CC 2017:

1) Go to File > Open and select the WebP image you want to open.

2) Click on the "Format" drop-down menu and select "WebP."

3) Click "Open."

The answer is yes, but only if you have the latest version of Photoshop CC (Creative Cloud).
