How Do I Make Torn Edges in Photoshop?
Torn edges are a common design element used to add a touch of realism or grunge to a design. They can be created using Photoshop's trusty Pen Tool, or with a few clicks of the mouse using a ready-made Photoshop Action. In this tutorial, we'll show you how to create both kinds of torn edges in Photoshop.Creating Torn Edges with the Pen Tool
Step 1: Open your image in Photoshop and select the Pen Tool from the toolbar (or press P on your keyboard).
Step 2: Starting at one edge of the image, click and hold down the mouse button as you trace along the edge that you want to torn. As you do this, you'll see anchor points appearing.
Step 3: When you get to the end of the edge, release the mouse button and then click again to create another anchor point. This will ensure that the edge is nice and straight.
Step 4: Now, still using the Pen Tool, click and drag each of the anchor points towards the center of the image. As you do this, you'll see the edge start to tear.
Step 5: Repeat this process until you're happy with the amount of tearing. Then, go to Edit > Define Brush Preset and give your brush a name.
Creating Torn Edges with an Action
If you don't want to go through all of that hassle, there's an easier way. You can find plenty of Photoshop Actions that will create torn edges for you with just a few clicks. We recommend this one from GraphicRiver. Just follow these simple steps:
